We also advise on the most suitable title for a role – is it a GM, a CEO, Operations Manager or Executive Manager? When the job is operational, don’t pay more than needed for an executive title.
An important question: will ‘fishing outside the club pool’ give you the fresh talent you want? Is someone with a hotel or pub background the answer? And do you need to look outside your local area, because you’ve exhausted all the talent nearby? If yes, how will you do that, apart from lots more expensive advertising? THE CHALLENGE
One of Sydney’s most prominent & leading clubs engaged us to find an Executive General Manager, a key role in driving the club’s future. The brief was a strong operator who could collaborate with the current high-performing leadership team & CEO to lead the club into the next chapter in the changing club landscape. The candidate had to align with the club’s culture, be people-centric, commercially minded & service-driven.

THE PROCESS
We conducted a detailed briefing with senior stakeholders and the CEO. We worked through the job description elements and covered where the business is and the plans moving forward. We also talked through role weighting and day-to-day expectations.
We got an overview of the key people in the business, the progression plans, and the gaps. Once we had this thorough brief, we designed a strategy. The search was comprehensive spanning the hospitality sector and three separate strategies covering clubs, pubs & restaurants. We also customised an interview questionnaire and references based on the weighting of the role and core elements.
The process entailed managing a pool of 156 applications through screening. 32 applicants were chosen for evaluation, leading to interviews with 8 candidates. We conducted significant pre-interview screens, personality profiling, police checks, references, detailed 90-minute interviews where we deep dived into their experience with behavioural interviewing.
THE SOLUTION
From initiation to completion, the recruitment procedure lasted 41 days. Ultimately the chosen candidate, who is going well in 2024, was identified through Placed connections, rather than conventional advertising channels.
